Abstract: We are trying to develop a specific methodology of understanding nature of terrorism as reflected in mass media. We have started by an attempt to answer the question: how people from different cultures are making sense about terrorism described in editorials of official prints. As a model we are analyzing newspapers editorials reflecting terrorist attacks against the US on 09/11 in 5 different cultures: Bulgarian, American, Russian, Spanish and English. Here we are presenting only comparison of 2 Bulgarian newspapers.

The major sources of information included in our methodology are: (1) The number and pattern of the editorials relating to the attack, (2) The literary styles of editorials, (3) The nature and number of historical references used, (4) The specific figures of speech noted as salient, and (5) The overall structure of themes emerging from the year long period of editorial reflection.

Key words: terror, mass media, phenomenological methodology, newspaper editorials, and cross-cultural analysis.

INTERACTION OF PARTS OF SPEECH THROUGH THE THEORY OF WORD-BUILDING FIELDS

Elena V. Murugova

Department of English Philology, Linguistic Institute, Rostov State Pedagogical University, st. B. Sadovaya 33, Rostov-on-Don, Russia

Received: 10.03.06; Cited: 16.04.06

Abstract: The field structure is the immanent property of language system as a whole, and it can be referred to language universals. Method of field structurization reveals the systematic ties within the vocabulary system, the existence of synchronic and diachronic, implicit and explicit, syntagmatic and paradigmatic, direct and indirect, motivated and idiomatic relationships between language items, dependence of word-building meaning of any derived word on a structural, semantic character of its word-building bases giving a wide-ranging analysis of interaction of parts of speech in the linguacreative activity of people. It promotes deep understanding of interaction of linear (affixation, compounding) and nonlinear (conversion, back-formation, abbreviation, etc.) ways of word-formation of this or that word-building field of definite part of speech, and gives us an opportunity to distinguish the usage of a word-building process, which takes part in world categorization, from a type of its word-building base. As the field theory shows the boundaries between parts of speech can not be fixed. By interaction of word-formation fields of parts of speech is necessary to understand processes of their influence each other, their joint participation in transference of this or that meaning. The word-building meaning comes to light as a result of semantic interaction between the word-building base and the derivative word.

Key words: vocabulary system, interdependence of parts of speech, word-building fields, derived word, word-building bases.

Abstract: One of the matters that seem to preocuppy all the more the sociologists of childhood, along with parents and educators, is the relationship of the child with the products of new age technology like internet. And the results this relationship could have in personal and social level in important institutions like teaching. Methodologically, in the reactions related with parametres of the "collective soul" (Fromm, 1957) of a society, we can either express a point of view, accepting or not accepting the logic of any reaction, either to try to articulate an explanation of the social and psychological parametres of this reaction, using the most systematic methodological tools. In this article, following the second option, we will try to explore how the idea of the industrial machine changed the notion of teaching. And we will make a point that this change transformed teaching in a way that comprehends it today as a function that has to protect children from the chaotic environment of new technology.

ETYMOLOGICAL FACTOR IN DEVELOPMENT OF FUNCTIONAL AND SEMANTIC PECULIARITIES OF DETERMINIZED MODERN AMERICAN MUSIC TERMS

Evgeniya V. Aleshinskaya

Nizhniy Novgorod State Linguistic University

Received: 10.09.07; Cited: 26.11.07

Abstract: Modern American Music Terms can be defined as words (or word combinations) which denote specific phenomena of modern music art and are used in the musical sphere being at the same time the only denomination of this or that musical phenomenon. MAMTs can be used outside musical contexts where they lose their terminological qualities and become determinized. Both functional and semantic peculiarities of MAMTs are determined by their etymology. MAMTs undergo two stages of semantic transformation accompanied by changes in their function: terminization (or demotivation when they lose their original common meaning and change their status from slang words to music terms) and determinization (or back motivation when apart from being terms they lower their stylistic status – are used in colloquial speech and slang in their original meanings).

Key words: music terminology, determinization, etymology
